Meet Rusty, he's my newest product prototype. Rusty is a Creamy Vanilla scented wax-dipped bear and will make a great smelling addition to any room that needs a touch of fragrance. If there is enough interest in Rusty, I'll gladly add him and all of his cousins to my permanent product selection. I've got to admit, I've grown attached to his cute little face sitting here looking at me... not to mention I'm seriously craving cupcakes now.

If I go ahead with the creation of Rusty's cousins in several different fragrances, they'll come wrapped in purple cello and topped with a beautiful bow - the perfect treat to yourself or someone special for about $15 each.

What's in the Soap Pot?

What have I been up to lately, you ask? Well, step right up and lay your eyes and nose on these beauties. Both of these soaps will be ready for the March Downtown Art Market.

Slainte! Pour yourself a pint and celebrate St. Paddy's Day in splendor with Bodyluxe by Shawna's Black and Tan Beer Soap. This exquisite soap is made with real Guinness and scented with a touch of patchouli. This soap is great for men and women alike with its distinct earthy aroma. The Guinness imparts a buttery smooth finish to the lather. Don't let the leprechauns save this beautiful gem for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!

Soaptastic! is a new fragrance to Bodyluxe by Shawna. Its very clean and fresh, and smells just like you'd imagine a bar of soap to smell. The bright horizontal layers give this new soap a flair unmatched by any other.

LiquiGel Soap

The next time you use the liquid soap at the public restroom, or lather up with a bottle of shower gel, give this a think...

A brief insight into the history of liquid soaps leads us back to 1865, and William Shepphard. It is because of his ingenious that today we use the washing liquids that we do today. Liquid soap, is in fact, made much like a solid bar soap. It too is a combination of fats and alkali to produce a chemical reaction and in turn, soap. The choice of oils and the choice of alkali, or type of lye in this case, give the liquid soap its goopy, bubbly form.

The Palmolive Company in 1898 created the first commercial liquid soap from, you guessed it, palm and olive oils. It quickly became popular and the way we wash things was changed forever. No longer was there scrubbing of a bar, now you could just drizzle a bit of soap and be done! Not to mention, there was much less residue... things just washed up more easily.

The process of creating a successful liquid soap has not been an easy one for me. It is a process similar to, but very much different from creating a bar soap. There are lots of steps and Bodyluxe by Shawna's LiquiGel Soap takes several days work from start to finish. I have chosen the oils to leave your skin clean, but not flaky and dry, like many commercial pump detergents can do.

Consider it a labor of love, as I do really enjoy the scientific dabbling involved in creating my products. Take home a bottle of LiquiGel soap for each sink in your house. Not only is it great for hand washing, but it makes a fabulous shower gel as well.

There's no doubt about it, the weather everywhere around is turning cold. With the ritual freeze of winter, along comes dry, cracked skin and painful chapped lips. Since I haven't yet figured out how to bottle sunshine from summertime to share during the freeze, I've come up with a couple of products that will save your skin this winter.

Fall is Falling All Around Us

Well, its that time of year. The temperatures aren't quite scorching here on the sunny South Plains any longer, and heck, I've even been able to open the doors and windows for a nice breeze a few times.

That means we're headed into Fall. Autumn. The season before Winter. I love this time of year, and all of the scents and memories that it invokes. Everything from jumping in piles of crunchy leaves to the first snow to the smell of a fire in the fireplace.

Especially for fall I have a few new fragrances soaped up already and a few yet to come. Grandma's Apple Pie leads off the list, and boy will it make you drool. Next up is Enchanting Jasmine and finally for this update, Winter Wonderland. Soap is an Art Form

I just wanted to take a moment to share with you some thoughts I've been having lately about soaping and how my business is run.

To me, my soap is an art form. I put loving care in creating the recipes from scratch - balancing the oils using my knowledge of chemistry to make a finished product that is great for your skin type. I don't just mix a bunch of stuff into a pot and dump it into a mold and hope for the best. I choose the best colors for the fragrance, swirl or pattern it to what I see in my mind's eye, just like an artist would paint on a canvas or sculpt a lump of clay.

I will not be out there competing with other soap makers at the markets and fairs. As much as I'd love to see my soap in everyone's household and loved by everyone who uses it, I will never mass market, and I will also never treat the art market as though as it is a flea market. I will never annoy a friend or potential consumer of my products as "just another sale" and I will never annoy you until you purchase a bar of my soap.

It is not my goal to underbid, outsell or otherwise inhibit anyone else who enjoys the arts as I do. We're in this together and I make soap because it makes me happy. I sell soap simply because I know it makes others happy... (and because my shelves would be way too full otherwise).

Its just about "that time of the month" again. No, not that.. eew.

Its Downtown Art Market time! Wahoo! I'll be bringing with me the much coveted Tropical Coconut Old Fashioned Bar Soap and Moistureluxe Lotion. There's nothing better when you're right out of the pool (except maybe a pina colada.. one for each hand!)

Unfortunately due to the wonderfully sun-baked temperatures we've been having, I will be at the market sans candles or bath candy. They'll just flat out melt. If you are interested in bath candy or a candle, please send me an email or message and I'll make sure to bring what you need in a cooler. Otherwise, it'll be soaps, lotions and gel scents this month... maybe the lip balm if it'll be under about 100 degrees.

I'm also thinking about working up a massage bar that's sort of like a solid body butter to rub on after a shower or to be rubbed by your loved one. If this sounds like something you'd enjoy, please let me know.

I hope to see everyone there at the market, come visit me and say hi. The farmers will be bringing more fresh local produce too, June officially kicks off the Farmer's Market season around here. Mmmmm.. food.

New Display!

I'm proud to announce that I've successfully built a new display for the next Art Market or Home Party setup. Its taken me a couple of weeks to do but it's sturdy and just like I pictured it! Now I just need to find some fabric or paint to do up the shelves with. But for now, I unveil to you *drumroll* - the new display!

Ta-Da!!!

Soap sniffing will be so much easier as the shelves keep everything sorted by fragrance and much less cluttered looking on the table. There is a sample bar in the front to sniff, and then the soaps to purchase are boxed up right behind it. Above the soaps are the matching lotions. Woohoo!

What's in the Soap Pot - May

Here's the latest soap pot update:

I've been doing some cleaning of my shelves. Keep an eye out for some soaps on clearance for a mere $1.25 a bar. I'll have them listed soon. They're perfectly good imperfect soaps. Some of them are just plain ugly, some of them I've discontinued in order to streamline my fragrance choices, and some of them have little scratches or dents, or are shaped differently than my new packaging.

Now, on to the new stuff! These soaps will all be ready by the 2nd weekend in June. Drumroll please....

Tropical Coconut - Tropical Coconut is great, where did I leave my pina colada? It smells quite a lot like the coconut scented tanning oil. There will be matching lotion, bath candy and candles to go with this soap.

Day Spa - The fresh clean scent of green tea crashes into a light citrus to put a little perk into your step. This soap will have a matching lotion available as well as bath candy.

Sleepytime - Sleepytime is a blend of lavender and chamomile and smells a lot like that name brand bedtime bath for babies. This soap will also have a matching lotion and bath candy.

Watch for these new soaps on the website in the next few weeks, and keep your eyes peeled for them at the art market on June 12th. Now is the time to stock up for fabulous summertime skin!

I wanted a more uniform packaging for my soaps, so I've now gone to an elegant soap box for packaging. Nestled inside is the same wonderful OldFashioned Bar Soap as before, it is just tucked away for safe keeping. This will in turn help me clean up my market display as well, making it easier to feature my soaps and much more convenient for you to sniff, shop and gift.

Inspiration... where it all comes from

I've been asked what my inspiration is for doing what I do... honestly, its a combination of things.

First, I'm a science geek at heart. Chemistry was my favorite class. To be in control of putting oils and emulsifiers together to make lotion, or to be in charge of adding fats to lye to make soap is just so very exciting to me. I love doing the research on a specialty recipe, and knowing the hows and whys of the way things are.

Secondly, I do have a bit of an artsy craftsy streak in me. I am terrible at drawing, even my stick figures look deformed. However, I have managed to make some fabulous soaps to date, and swirls seem to be my forte.

I also love to help others. If I know that what I do brings a smile to a loved one's face, or helps a child's itchy rash, then it was all worth it in the end. Knowing that somehow, even little ol me can make a difference really keeps me going.

I dream my soap. If I've made it, its because I saw it in a dream usually. The patterns, techniques and fragrance blends come to me when I relax. This is my passion, my art. Its not a business for an income at all. I do this because I love it, and I hope that you will love it too.

What's in the Soap Pot? April Edition

So far this month I've made 2 batches of soap for the May market - Tiger Lily and Black Raz. I had intended to get the lilac restocked as well but ran out of fragrance, so it may not make it for May, but it'll be along shortly, as I'm awaiting a shipment of supplies as we speak.

I've been a bit slack in getting the blog up to date, but honestly its because I've been trying to restock all the wonderful soaps, lotions and other products that keep selling out during the Art Market. I hope to see everyone there the 2nd Saturday of May!

Keep an eye on this space for more to come in the not so distant future... I'll do better, I promise!

And Now For Something Completely Different...

As many of you know, my Lime-a-licious soap was a bit of a flop. It was gorgeous but the fragrance had morphed and well, I didnt want to sell Vinyl scented soap. So I went about fixing it. The way us soap makers fix soap is by a process called "Rebatching." We take the soap, melt it down again, and fix whatever problems there might be. Upon doing this with the Lime-a-licious I realized quickly (and do did my daughter) that the color was no longer going to be quite so appetizing.

Quick jump to another story - At the last Art Market you may have seen my small menagerie of stuffed pets. Poor lonely Davey is the heart throb of the bunch. Well, he couldn't help himself... I didn't let him outside quickly enough this afternoon and Dragon Splat soap was born. Davey says he's sorry.. but hey, even a dinodragon can't hold it -that- long!

Dragon Splat soap is a great gag gift and will be available in about a week for $2.00 per splat. It is scented in Lime-a-licious. Get it while its hot! Erm.. uh.. eew.

New Product Spotlight - Soy Spa Candles in Glass

Today's soaping project was Margarita. Fun swirls of green, pink and orange - I've got my fingers crossed that it'll hold onto the wonderfully juicy lime fragrance. It'll be ready in about 3 weeks or so, I'll be sure to let you know when!

What's in the Soap Pot? - Feb 23, 2010

Today I've ventured forth to make another batch of the 100% Natural Oatmeal, Milk & Honey Old Fashioned Bar Soap. This particular soap has no colors or fragrances and is extremely pleasing to just about every skin type, be it sensitive or ... not so. So how does a soap with no fragrance... well, smell? Honestly its pretty nice. It smells clean, but not perfumey clean. And no, it doesn't make you smell like a bowl of breakfast cereal either.

This particular soap was created with the mindset that oatmeal can be soothing, goat's milk is high in fat and great for skin, and the honey is a humectant - meaning that it helps draw moisture to the skin.

A Lesson: Soap defined and that "Antibacterial" craze.

So what is soap? Is it the stuff in a bottle that says "Antibacterial" on it? Is it that pressed funky shaped bar from the grocery store that comes in box, 8 to a package? How about that clear bar of stuff in fruity flavors that's supposed to be good for my face? Or better yet, its that stuff we put into laundry to get our clothes clean, right? There is a lot of confusion today about what soap really is.

Its time to do a little myth busting here. The true definition of a soap is that it is a mixture of an acid (fats and oils) that react with a base (sodium or potassium hydroxide) to form soap and glycerin. GASP! You mean you're rubbing fat all over your skin? Well, no. Once the mixture has gone through the soap making chemical reaction, known as saponification, it is no longer just fats and lye.. its a great bar of handmade soap that your skin is going to love. A truly accomplished soapmaker knows how to do the research to take a blend of oils to get their best skin attributing properties and turn them into a bubbly bar of soap full of lather. Finding a good blend of oils is both an art as well as a science, honestly.

So is that stuff at the grocery store really soap? Well, look at the label. The FDA says that only real soap made by the above process can be labelled as such. The others on the shelf are synthetic detergents. Detergents are made from chemicals and things that are hard to pronounce. They can be very drying and irritating to the skin, and leave a sticky film around the tub.

So what about that "Antibacterial" craze? Soap by its very nature is antibacterial. When you wash your hands with soap and water, the soap binds to germs and allows them to slide right off and down the drain when you rinse. And don't worry about that bar of soap sitting there collecting germs - as soon as you rinse it as well, its clean as a whistle. The last thing you want to do is to go around half-killing a bunch of bacteria. It makes them come back even stronger and is how those nasty hospital "superbugs" were born. The bacteria even mutate to be resistant to the antibacterial type of products over time, so just washing those worries down the drain is preferred.

So pick your poison, are you a bar soap or liquid soap kind of person? Either way, you're sure to have the cleanest hands on the block!

The Direction of 2010

I just wanted to take a minute to share with you my direction for Bodyluxe by Shawna for 2010. 2009 was a totally awesome year, and I hope to take what I've learned and improve on it even further.

My goals for 2010:
* Streamline products into several great fragrances and offer a matching line - Old Fashioned Bar Soap, Moistureluxe Lotion, Bath Candy, Soy Spa Candles and Body Buttercream.

* Feature a new fragrance each month, corresponding to the season, with a potential discount on the monthly fragrance.

* Offer 2 sizes of Soy Spa Candles in glass, rather than the current tins, for all the candle lovers out there. They will be elegant, yet affordable, and clean burning.

* Expand the product line to include a gel type liquid soap that is natural - no detergents like the store brands. (Testing currently in progress)

* Expand the specialty product line to include an ultra lotion for those who suffer from skin irritations such as psoraisis, eczema and super dry skin rashes.

* Reinforce the notion to the world that handmade is wonderful, and share my love of crafting and soap science with anyone who will listen.

I hope to find your continued love and support as I expand my knowledge and offer great products at affordable prices for everyone in your life. <3

Product Spotlight - Body Buttercream

This month, the Downtown Art Market is also having a Friday evening gig that they're calling the Moondance Market. It'll be Friday, November 13 from 6-10pm. You guessed it, I'll be there too! Unfortunately I am no longer able to accept personal checks - not even local ones. I always said I would take checks until someone screwed me, and just that has happened. I was always taught to trust everyone and be nice and be helpful, but for that I have been played for a fool and taken for a decent amount of products. I certainly hope this person is enjoying their merchandise, and sincerely hope that no one else at the fall festival was ripped off like I was.

I am fully able to accept credit cards through Google checkout - If you have an order you'd like to pick up from me at the Downtown Art Markets, I can always invoice you by email and have your goods ready for pickup on the Saturday morning.

The newest addition to my Old Fashioned Bar Soap line has finished curing. The Daily Facial Soap is lightly scented with a soft and smooth fragrance, and the colors are out of this world!

Daily Facial Soap is special because it contains bentonite clay especially to draw excess oil from your skin. The result is a clean face without being overly dry or oily. Its treated my combination skin absolutely wonderfully, and my "teenage breakouts" are practically nonexistant now. All of this without any strange chemicals? Of course! As always my products are hand made and designed to be as close to 100% natural as possible.

After washing with the Daily Facial Soap, rinse and pat your face dry. Then follow up with just 2 drops of the Daily Facial Lotion for the softest, most kissable cheeks on the block. Mwah!

Big News on the Market Front!!!

The 39th Annual Arts & Crafts festival at the Garden & Arts Center has been moved to September 19th from 9am - 6pm. This is great news! This gives everyone a chance to come see me twice this month!! Woohoo!!!

I will be located at the Downtown Art Market on September 12th from 9am - 3pm, hopefully in the usual spot. Come see me there and partake in the great fresh produce from our local farmers and other area arts and crafts. There are some truly great artists out there!

Then the next weekend - September 19th from 9am to 6pm - I will be set up by the GAC Sign under a tree. Just look for my signature purple booth. There will be great artists and crafters, live music and great food. Since its only once a year, this is definitely worth coming to see. I can't wait to talk with you there!

Gearing up for the Fall Festival

This month, rather than being at the Downtown Art Market this month, I will be at the Garden & Arts Center's Fall Festival on September 12th. While I'll be enjoying all of the food and entertainment going on, I'll also have almost my full line of products with me, so long as the weather holds. Here is what the Garden & Arts Center say about the 39th Annual Fall Festival:

"The Fall Arts Festival is a family-oriented arts festival that includes more than 100 vendors selling handcrafted items, all day entertainment on the main stage, art demonstrations and concession booths. This event has traditionally attracted more than 10,000 visitors and this year we are hoping to make the festival bigger and better than ever. Vendors have traditionally offered such items as jewelry, clothing, hand made items and other fine arts and crafts."

Several new soaps will be making their debut at the Garden & Arts Festival. Skyfire, Sea Mist, and Lilac Breeze, as well as my Daily Facial Bar. I have also made more of the Kitchen Citrus Scrubby Soap, too!

This is Skyfire - a neutral blend of Amber, Vanilla and Musk. Its got a very light fragrance to it, a must have for everyone! The lotion is to die for, probably my new favorite.

This particular soap is Sea Mist. Its a very clean blend of Ozone, Mint and Rain. Very refreshing, its great for anyone's shower or sink!

This is my new Daily Facial Soap. It contains Bentonite clay to help dry out extra oil, and has worked very well on the teenage acne that lives in our household. It won't over-dry, and you can always pair it with my daily facial lotion for ultimate softness.

Lilac Breeze! A perfect compliment to the lotions and Airluxe Gel Scents that I've already been making. It reminds me of smelling lilacs in summer through my kitchen window. Totally wonderful!

This pretty much completes my spread of soaps for now - until fall and winter rolls around :)

Another Blazing Success!

I just totally love the Downtown Art Market. Not only am I a vendor there, but I had a blast shopping at all the different stands there yesterday. I came home with 2 more plants for my back yard, a bag of sweet onions, a cantaloupe and I bought my husband an amazing gourd that had been painted to look as if a dragon is hatching from it. Where else but Lubbock can you find such great variety?

I'd like to thank everyone who stopped by an visited me at my booth this month - I hope you enjoy your soaps and lotions, and I hope to see you at the Fall Festival at Clapp Park next month, or back at the Downtown Art Market again in October. I can't believe it, time sure flies when you're busy as all heck! I've been really working the past couple of weeks on getting ready for the Lubbock Downtown Art Market on August 8th. If the weather holds, I may be able to bring a few more product types from my line this month. If its hot, well.. I can't have it melting.

Having said this - I am taking orders in advance for you to pick up at the DAM on August 8th. If there are any products you'd like to have (that might melt such as my Body Buttercream or Soy Spa Candles) please let me know. You can pay in advance if you like, or at the market, and I'll have it bagged up and made ready, especially for you! I've decided to keep my business rolling in the more natural and completely homemade direction, so I've discounted all remaining shower gels, bubble baths and body sprays that I have in stock. I'm proud to say that all of my current recipes are my own, and of my own research, and that's the reasoning behind leaving the shower gel and bubble baths. I want to be in control of the ingredients that go into them, and I just don't feel that these are what I want to be selling. Keep in mind though, they're still great products, just not the products I want to be spending my time on.

I will soon be learning how to make liquid soap, so this will be a great shower gel and hand soap - and it will be as great as my Old Fashioned Bar Soaps, as soon as I've mastered the technique. I've been doing research on the liquid soaps for a while now. I apologize for the lapse in blog posts lately, I have found myself fortunate enough to be in attendance at the 10th Annual Texas Soapmaker's Association convention. It was such an unbelievable experience, and I'm truly impressed at the caliber of soapmakers we are lucky enough to have here in Texas.

It was great to hear the guest speakers speak, the expertise they have shared will last a lifetime. I only wish that they could each have had some extra time, because I know I could have learned even more. The guest speakers were some of the top people in our industry - Marie Gale (I bought her FDA Labelling book too and had her sign it!), Tammy Doering, Alecia Marie Fruin, Debbie Matteucci, and our very own Sarah Bogle, Rachel Lane and Susan Svec. To me, all these people are like celebrities. The soaping demos from Lisa Chouinard and Joy Douglas (Feel better soon, Robert!) were also nice to watch. I enjoyed seeing someone else do what I've done, to see if they have a better technique I can learn from.

I have nothing but great things to say about the entire experience. I came home with a great door prize (Thanks Jann from Texas Container & Supply) and took advantage of the vendors being set up there as well. I bought some GM powder from Star Moore (Supplies by Star) and Susan Miller Cavitch's book from SoapEquipment.

I made some new friends too, and had some fun times just sitting around listening to stories and hearing of other people's experiences.

Thank you all very much for all of the hard work that went into the convention. I really, personally appreciate it, and I hope to be able to attend the next conference in 2010!

Swirlapalooza!

The Downtown Art Market was a huge success. There were a bunch of vendors there and they had some amazing things! I personally came home with a new little car and some plants for my yard.

A Yum! of double proportions

Its been a creative month or two for me - I've been experimenting more with butters and here's a divine concoction I've come up with. I call it Body Buttercream and it is so luscious. Body Buttercream is a combination of Avocado, Mango and Shea butters as well as a few skin loving oils and a totally drool-worthy fragrance. I specifically did NOT want a body butter that was extra greasy. With the heat around here I don't need to slide off of my chair, LOL. Having said that though, I've found that a little of this stuff sure goes a long way and its done very well in softening my skin after swimming for several days in a row. You know how drying chlorine can be in 100 degree heat.

The Body Buttercream is sold by weight - a hefty 5 oz of buttercream, in an adorable 3 inch diameter flat jar. I can do any of my fragrances in the buttercream, the Black Raspberry & Vanilla just happens to be the one I chose for sampling. Let me know what you need!

Also, I now have Black Raspberry & Vanilla fragrance - just like that major body product chain store. Its wonderful! Now if I can keep it around long enough to make much with it, seems my teenage daughters love it too.

I've discovered something new that I have totally fallen in love with. Solid parfume balm - its an easy way to get a quick fix of fragrance on your pulse points without having to tote around a whole bottle that may break or leak. It doesn't leave a wet spot where it was sprayed, either. So far I've created these fab little fragrance sticks in Heavenessence (Angel by Thierry Mugler) and Love Always (Endless Love by Victoria's Secret). I'm still debating on which others to add to the line as well, so if you have any suggestions just let me know. Sometimes soap imitates art

Its true - soaping is a great way to let the artist inside of me get out a little at a time. Its a great challenge to see something in my head and then try to get it out of the mold in the same way that I pictured it.

While this isnt exactly how I'd imagined it, its very close. The peach should have been purple. It figures I can't create peach or orange when I try, but only when I don't. Ha! But anyway, this soap is Moonlight Walk - a fragrance I'd had trouble soaping 7 months ago. This time however, its gorgeous and smells fab.

Apricot Freesia Shaving Soap

Yesterday's experiment was cut this morning. Apricot Freesia shaving soap. I put together a new recipe and I'm very excited to give it a try in a few weeks. Its got some bentonite and kaolin clay to give it glide for a good, close shave. If this works the way I hope it does, I'll definitely make a more manly fragrance for all the guys out there. If nothing else, its awfully springy colored and cute. :)

Tonight is a meeting about starting up a new Lubbock Farmer's Market. I really hope that this project will take off, and that they'll let me participate. I really need a good venue that I could do on a regular basis in hopes of meeting people and showing off my soaps to the real world. I want everyone to see what a different handmade can make.

Honestly, I love the Cherry & Almond. Soaped up like this it smells like black cherries drunk on amaretto to me. Yum yum yum! I've been playing with swirling techniques and this turned out a little on the funky side. (That's cool funky not yuck funky in case ya were wondering, hehe.) I expect the cream color to go more of a tan-beige before its all said and done.

I've been doing some experimentation lately. First - I really wanted to make a round soap. Introducing the Citrus Scrubby Kitchen Soap. Its about hand sized and contains sweet orange and lime essential oils, as well as cornmeal to help scrub the blech off of your hands. Its a great gardener's or mechanic's soap as well! Just wanted to throw everyone a quick update as to what I've been up to lately...

I'm currently working on a body buttercream (frosting) that has so far proven divine. Its in testing - as in I've given it to my teenage daughters. I figure if they love it then its gotta be done well, right? My test batch is in Mango & Papaya, great for summer now that we're hitting 100 degrees during the day here.

Also in the works is my new Aches and Pains cream. I'm not sure what sort of name its going to get, but with a blend of essential oils and MSM added, it will hopefully help to fix those sore and achy joints and muscles. I'm hoping it'll work as planned because I'm soon to start my new exercise routine and I'm going to need all the help I can get. More on this later once its been proven to work or not...

Ok so its been a little more crazy than soapy lately - I've been off of my feet in recovery but now I'm getting back with it again. For starters, here's a new soap from a couple of weeks ago. Its called Day Spa, and has a fabulously clean and fresh Green Tea & Aloe fragrance. It really wakes you up in the morning shower. :)

I've been working up a Beauty Jar formula as well - its a facial cleanser made with moisturizers and oil reducers to help clear and soften problem skin. Watch for its update and release next week some time!

That time is rolling near again - the over commercialized holiday we've come to know as Valentine's Day. No matter what you do with your significant other, I think that you should at least celebrate in some way - even if you just take a little time to relax and enjoy each others company. What is it that you like most about him or her? Why are you attracted? What little things would you miss the most if they were gone?

I can't imagine my life being any different than it is today, and I don't want it to ever change. Life is good!

On that note - make the day a little more special for your loved one. Give them your heart! (or at least.. give one of mine! :P ) Or maybe a Pamper Me! Selection is on order - the Sensual Pomegranate or Love Always are great for this time of year, make her feel special.

Toddler Soap

I thought my little dude needed some of his own soap - so I blinged this batch out Toddler-Style to try to help the littl'uns get the right idea about getting clean. Bright and shiny, this bar soap is made with Shea Butter and Oatmeal - designed specifically to be gentle to that oh so baby soft skin. It is fragranced in Sleepytime - a great blend of lavender and chamomile, not at all unlike a certain brand of bedtime baby wash that we've come to enjoy and appreciate at our house. When this soap is ready - mid February or so - I plan to offer it along with a matching lotion and bubble bath as a set. I'm hoping that it'll encourage the little dude to enjoy his bath all that much more, and he'll smell great when he cuddles for ninites after his bath. Of course, its great for adults too, who doesn't enjoy a nice, hot relaxing bath as the scent of lavender and chamomile help you drift off to sleepyland.

I just thought I'd take a moment to share the pictures of what's coming up in the next couple of weeks. Heavenessence on the left is curing happily and will available soon, so keep an eye on the website! It smells great.

On the right is yesterday's Cucumber & Melon. It turned out just like I had envisioned, yay! Its smelling up my entire dining room right now, I can't believe its so sweet and fruity. It'll be ready in about 3 weeks.

Tomorrow, watch for pictures of the new Toddler Soap. Its very cute! My toddler likes a lot of bling so you can imagine that it'll be very vibrant, giving the little kiddies some fun in the tub!

For those of you who watch the site regularly you may have noticed that I've been reworking the inventory a bit. Some fragrances have disappeared, new ones are showing up every week. This is my effort to comply with my fragrance listing that I posted a couple of weeks ago. The Heavenessence soap is curing, look for it around the end of the month along with lotions and body spray to match! Slated to make this week is a sweet and fruity cucumber & melon bar soap, as well as getting a jump on my toddler line - lotion, bubble bath and a bar soap. Look for the toddler goodies around the middle to end of February!

My 8oz lotions will soon be coming in a pretty tabletop pump bottle that should look fantastic on your kitchen counter, beside the bed or on your bathroom counter. I hope to be able to get photos posted fairly quickly, but don't be put off by the lack of pictures on the website for the new items. I'm not moving as quickly as I used to these days it seems!

Also keep an eye out for other candle fragrances - you know I'll make just about anything in any fragrance, just ask! I hope you enjoy what I have planned for this spring and summer as much as I enjoy making it for you!

Oh yeah, this was supposed to be about the pricing. I've dropped prices on several items. Some due to using a better formula or recipe, and some because I just love you all so much. Introducing Soy Spa Candles

Bodyluxe by Shawna is now creating hand poured Soy Spa Candles. These adorable candles are made in silver tins with a clear window lid on top. They will be sold in all of the favorite fragrances, a perfect item for your "me time" whether it be in the bath or shower, or relaxing in bed with your honey after a long day at work.

These candles are made from soy wax, a USA grown renewable resource. Soy wax burns cleaner than paraffin and lasts just as long, if not longer. Because it has a lower melting point, a larger burn pool is created with these candles - releasing more of those great fragrances you love into the air.

Each candle weighs about 5 ozs, and comes in a silver metal tin with a pretty bow on top. It should burn between 20 and 30 hours, for your olfactory enjoyment.

I had the theme song to Carmen Sandiego in my mind when I was typing the title. I loved that show, Rockapella was awesome... aaaanyway.. where am I going to be this week?

Firstly, I'm participating in the Bellaire Baptist Church Arts & Crafts Show (34th & Chicago) on Saturday, December 6th. I'll be set up from 8am till about 6pm and I encourage everyone to drop on by. I'll have samples set up and as much fun stuff as I can manage to fit onto one table. There is a $2 entrance admission, but this goes to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, so its all a good cause anyway. Come visit, sniff things, try out the lotions and lip balm. I'll have stocking stuffers as well as the ability to make gift sets for you - and I'll also be taking custom orders at the time.

Also - I'm in December's Out of the Box Sampler. Michelle has done a great job making me feel like a welcome addition. Oh How it Screams...

... my face that is! I've been whinging and moaning all week about how my cheeks are dying without lotion. I ran out of the daily moisturizer I rely on during the winter months, and with the cool, dry wind blowing down here in Texas, my face yells at me every time I go outside.

Why spend $2 on a new bottle when I can make my own? So that's what I did... and now I want to share it with you. This lotion is a blend of avocado and hazelnut oils - the lightest non-comedogenic oils I could find, loaded with all the yummy nutrients that a face could ask for. The Mad Scientist Lurks Within....

I am in need of a great shaving cream. I'm so tired of forking out good money for that nasty stuff that dries my skin out so badly. Sooo what do I do? Make it myself!

I spent yesterday evening in the kitchen whipping up (no pun intended) this luscious cream soap. Yeah, its really homemade soap - just like the bars I've been doing. Oils + lyes + mix and blend and and and.. eventually if you do it right you get soap!

There is limited research out there that I was able to find - so a lot of it is coming out of my mind and what I've learned from making other types of soap. What makes this unique? Well, its super duper thick, for starters. I've added moisturizers and glide enhancers to make that razor do its thing without doing a number to my legs. Oh yeah - as of this morning its still 100% natural. It'll be something like 98% natural when its all done - gotta add preservatives coz no one wants green, fuzzy shave cream.

Busy, Busy, Busy

Yesterday was a good day. It was a day to spend a ton of cash on Christmas presents. I'm having a blast shopping this year, a few gifts at a time and I'm bound to find everything I want. I love seeing the kids open their gifts and get excited about what's inside. It really makes me feel great about the season. I can't wait to get out the decorations, but I'll hold off until the first of December, I promise.

Anyway, when we got home we ordered a pizza and I started photographing the soaps that are going to be ready in about a week - I actually got further than I'd planned because I was able to get them all up on the website already.

Today's soap feature: Black & Tan Beer Soap - made with Guinness Draught

Why beer? It actually adds nicely to the lather of the soap - making it very creamy and nice feeling. The Guinness gives the soap a warm, earthy fragrance and I helped that out a bit by adding a complimentary scent, but just a touch. Besides, if you can't drink it all day long, you may as well bathe with it, its a great gift idea for the Irish, guys, beer lovers or Irish Guy Guinness lovers.

Ornies, Ornies Everywhere!

We spent the day making ornies yesterday - cute little ornaments for our Christmas tree. It was an entire family affair and we had a great time. My hubby & I baked them in the morning before the kids woke up, then after some breakfast we dug into the painting. We've now got an entire pile of ornaments ready to be given as gifts, and still have enough for our own tree this year.

In case you're curious, here's the recipe we used:
4 cups of flour
2 cups of salt
1 bottle of cinnamon
2 cups of water

Mix dry ingredients together, then add water and stir. Its like a very thick pastry crust. If its not wet enough, wet your hands and use them to knead in the extra moisture. Take out in large hand-sized balls and roll flat on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch. Use cookie cutters or a knife to make your ornaments. Poke a hole in the top for an ornie hanger (I'm going to use red, white and green striped pipe cleaners) Place on baking sheet and bake for about 45 mins at 375. You want them to be rock hard and dry, even in the middle.

Once they're cool you can paint them - we used water based acrylic - the cheap stuff from the craft store.

It was great fun had by all and amazing to put all of us around a table at the same time again. I love doing fun and crafty things with the kids - especially when it means we can make memories together during these busy days.

Sewing up a Storm

From time to time I get these creative flashes, I become super motivated to make something useful with my hands. I guess that's what prompted my soapmaking journey in the first place. Today's creative adventure was not exactly with soap, but with soap in mind.

Sewing is a path I haven't persued in a while now, my machine has been boogered up for a bit. I was lucky enough to be able to borrow my mom's machine for a little while (amazingly enough she wasn't using it this week - I think that machine has more miles on it than I do!) What came from a few scissor snips and a few stitches really kinda impressed me....

Soap Bags! Yep, you read that right, soap bags. These little bags are made from velour (actually from some of my daughters' velour sweats that they'd not worn much and outgrown quickly if you want to know the complete truth). Its like a gift bag and washcloth together, more value for the money! The bags are like soap and washcloth all in one - a great way to hang onto that slippery bar, or combine all those annoying end pieces. Just put the soap inside and tie the bag, then wet it in the tub or shower and scrub! Once you're finished, squeeze it out and hang it to dry. Each bag will come with your choice of Old Fashioned Bar Soap as well, but don't forget to order extras for when your soap is gone.

This whole Christmas Spirit thing sure has taken hold of me. Today we went shopping, got first dibbs on wrapping paper and some gifts. Its hard to shop for the kids because they're normally with us, so I'm trying to take advantage of them being in school still. Usually I'm fairly bah humbug about the whole season but for some reason this year is different. I'm really loving it.

While we were out I found a new soap mold that I couldn't resist. These Christmas Trees, Stockings and Iced Gingerbread Guys weigh in near 3 1/2 oz. each and smell so wonderfully, scented in Holiday Essence. Don't forget your holiday gift exchange at work - these would be great small gifts.

I think I should take out some stock in Wilton - I bought 6 of the large "comfort grip" cookie cutters today. Santa is going to love us! This isn't your typical 2 bite cookie at all.. its a whole snack. I think between the cookies and the cake decorating that I like to attempt from time to time, I could single handedly keep Wilton in business.
